Gala Day Sports Results – Saturday 24th October 2020

Thu , 29/10/2020

Last Saturday, 24th October, saw our college community given the duties of hosting both end of year GBC Gala Day sports. Given the limitations on sporting involvement this year, it was particularly important that our students were provided every opportunity to participate in and enjoy a fun filled day with their friends, all played within the spirit of the Greater Brisbane Conference ethos. Mixed netball and mixed touch football were chosen as the two sports this year given that these two sports were completely missed in term 2 as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. Interest in the event was greater than anticipated with 85 teams entered across years 3 to 12. The structure of the day allowed students to play in both sports if they wished – and many did! It was wonderful to witness the pure joy our students experienced within the surrounds of the amazing facilities at The Springfield Central Sports Complex. Heath Del Favero, James Patmore and I could not have been more pleased with the outcome of the day.

A great deal of work was carried out behind the scenes to ensure the day was such a success. I would like to thank Louise Brown, James Patmore and Heath Del Favero for their tireless work leading up to the day. In addition, Kristie Ahern and Stephanie McPherson contributed significantly to the trialling and organising of netball teams and arranging of uniforms and equipment. Thank you also to Jackie McComb, parent Anna Clark and senior student Mitch Burrows for their coaching expertise in Netball. Sincere gratitude must go to Warren Newble who organised our touch teams and coaches Matthew Joseph, Mitch Burrows and parents Sharon McDonough and Leighanne Gibbons, to whom we are so grateful. It was wonderful to see many of our primary staff and parents also giving their time to coach and manage our junior teams as well as secondary students Grace Swanborough, Charlotte Burow, Jade Davidson, Georgie Parfrement, and Phoebe Jackson (who left the college a week prior) giving up the opportunity to play so that they could coach our younger teams. This generosity truly exemplifies just how special our college community is.

Finally, a big thank you to Richard Bannah who assisted Warren Newble with catering and coordinating of the TSAC mobile food van, to Richard Clark for looking after Covid-Safe duties and Julie Crouch for organising highly quality netball officiating and photography duties, as well the Weekley family and others who assisted in the large scale pack up during torrential rain.

An amazing day had by all and the perfect finish to our GBC Sporting year.
